Todos Santos Pueblo Mágico.

WHY IS IT CALLED “PUEBLO MAGICO”?

The year of 2001 the federal government, specifically the Secretariat of Tourism implemented a program that they called Pueblos Mágicos de México which main objective was to generate economic, social and touristic development in small towns located in coastal and rural areas.

We found the following fragment published in the web site of the federal secretariat of tourism:

“The Pueblos Mágicos” are places with symbolism and legends that transcend time. They are historical towns where very significant events took place, they are places that embody the national identity in every corner, there is a magic that emanates from their cultural heritage. Visiting these towns give you an opportunity to discover the real charm of our country”.

The towns that aspire to be incorporated to the program need to meet all the characteristics imposed by the federal authorities. These are the most important but not all of them:

Restored old architecture; living traditions; legends that overcome time; relevant historical events; with no more than twenty thousand inhabitants; surrounded by extraordinary natural sceneries and located relatively near a major tourist destination.

Todos Santos won its distinction as Pueblo Mágico in 2006 and since then up to date, the town has experienced a significant growth in all matters. It may not be positive for some natives, however, the program proves to be successful in Todos Santos.

No less important is to say that Todos Santos is not the only “Pueblo Mágico” in the state of Baja California Sur. There are two more so far: Santa Rosalía and Loreto.

Actually in the whole country there are 177 towns with the distinction, so, if you happened to be on holidays in any important Mexican destination, don´t forget to visit at least one of the “Pueblos Mágicos” around. Surely you will enjoy it very much.
